Theme 1: Partnership, Priorities and Preferences

Theme Synopsis

There is widespread recognition that research will have greater impact if it arises from partnership between patients and researchers. Patient involvement is increasingly required by policy makers, regulators, funders and journals to improve the relevance and impact of research. Despite this growing interest, a major challenge remains that patients, researchers and health professionals lack the knowledge, skills and experience to effectively collaborate on research. Via the SONG Initiative, we have involved 9000 patients, caregivers and health professionals in setting priorities for research in chronic kidney disease, which underpin the four themes of the BEAT-CKD/CRE-PACT research portfolio: Prevention, Self Management and Lifestyle, Better Treatment and Care, Equity and Access.
