Types of consumer involvement in research 

There are many ways consumers can be take part in research.  

  • Consumer engagement refers to ways consumers have contact with the health system, and research. This includes newsletters or information sessions to hear about recent research.  
  • Consumer participation in research refers to taking part as a participants in a project. For example, volunteering for a clincial trial to filling out a research survey. 
  • Consumer involvement is when consumers take part to a research project. For example, consumers may be involved at the start to help decide what questions to ask. This is known at priority setting. Consumers can also be include at the end to share the results. This is known as dissemination.  

Involving consumers means their experiences, and views are considered in the research produced.
