“… consumers and community members add value to health and medical research and have a right and responsibility to do so.” – NHMRC
Consider involving consumers in your research project just like you would consider the chosen methodology and as an investment like any other research infrastructure (e.g. Staff, technology). It is important to reflect on what is feasible and sustainable for all involved; the research team, the consumers, research objectives and the funding.
Tips of consumer involvement in grants:
- Keep track of principles for consumer involvement as you will need to cite this in your grant application.
- Plan and think about a consumer involvement budget early on! It should not be an afterthought or a tick box.
- Develop a stakeholder map. Identify people, organisations and communities that will be impacted by your research. Then, identify existing networks and opportunities to collaborate.
- Be specific in your grant application! Answer the who, what, why, how, and when questions.
- Read the grant application guidelines. Understand who will be reading your application – some are assessed by the community or stakeholders.
- Make sure the terminology is reflective of what you are trying to achieve.
