Qualitative research helps to answer the ‘how’ and‘why’ of an issue. It allows participants to share perspectives and experiences. Qualitative research aims to describe, understand and explore a topic or idea.  

 

Qualitative research has many strengths including:  

  • Understand the ‘why’ of the results 
  • Examine the topic in depth 
  • Various methods e.g. focus groups, interviews, workshops

 

Examples of qualitative data include:  

  • Transcripts from workshops, focus groups and interviews  
  • Observations and field notes  
  • Feedback forms 
  • Photos and videos  
  • Different documents such as government documents
