3. How can consumers become involved in conferences and workshops?

  • Sometimes consumers present with researchers, be on a panel, or co-chair sessions.  
  • Often conferences will provide sessions and activities to become involved. For example, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) Annual Scientific Meeting holds a Consumer Day. It is for to patients and caregivers with presentations of their interest. there are often online options, if you are not able to attend in person. 
  • Look at what is coming up and what interests you. For example, on the Kidney Health Australia and ANZSN website.  
  • Reach out to the organising committee to ask about registration/attendance and transport. Some organisations may help with conference fees.  
  • In 2019, the International Society of Nephrology’s World Congress of Nephrology held a ‘patient and carer’ forum. It gave research updates and education to people with kidney disease and their caregivers.  
  • BEAT-CKD hold a workshop for consumers and researchers each year to discuss a topic important to everyone.
