Patients can use their skills and experience to support, provide guidance and assist in the development of research. Frameworks support building confidence and trust with patients. Several organisations have outlined principles and strategies for patient involvement in research. Some examples include the UK Standards for Public Involvement in research and Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Patient Engagement Framework.
The UK Standards for Public Involvement include six domains: inclusive opportunities, working together, support and learning, communication, impact, and governance. You can access the standards here.
