At the start it may feel daunting to meet new people and work alongside researchers. Remember your input is valuable. Researchers may also be nervous. We have some tips below that could help you.

  • Go to meetings with the research team. This helps to build relationships and become comfortable with people you will work with. There will often be patient/consumer engagement officers to provide support and make you feel comfortable.
  • Join a consumer group to meet other consumers interested in becoming involved in research projects.
  • Remember that everyone in the team is interested in hearing what you have to say.
  • Don’t feel pressure to speak on behalf of everyone, just share your experience.
  • Ask questions! If you are unsure about something don’t be afraid to ask. Chances are someone is thinking the same thing. It may be helpful to improve the project, such as making researchers rethink the use of jargon.
